Train of thoughts

It has been 11 years since I had spent a night on a train. Prior to that, I would have probably done about 28 over a period of 5 years, two of those unreserved. For those who know how the trains are the lifeline connecting the Eastern parts of India to Vellore, the majority of passengers are patients who revere the more-than-100 year old Christian Medical College as the last thing to turn to for health purposes. They are always full and bustling and tickets need to be purchased well in advance. The Indian Railways would offer us students a generous 50% discount on sleeper class tickets and hence, the best choice. Kalyan at Vijaywada or Palasa, Ajay at Balasore and Bose, Harold, Anandroop and myself to Howrah were the regular team. Going the distance

I had returned from Paris after my fellowship in April 2012. I was still reeling to the difference in life and lifestyle. My clinic looked nothing like the plush and smart department of around 150 dermatologists nor was I working for the research projects funded by Pierre Fabre or L'Oreal. I craved for croissants and fromage. But one can't keep day-dreaming and actually has to start working. The prime objective of earning bread and later thinking of cheese was an appropriate thing to do. Hence I started off working in small polyclinics which had better chances of me getting patients than a premium corporate hospital where established dermatologists ruled the roost. Experiences from Syria

"I went for a walk with my colleagues across the city that has been razed to the ground by ISIS airstrikes. There was an old man that insisted that we take his picture and told us he was an engineer before the war and he lost his son and became a carpenter after. There was a Kurdish sign in his stop that said “ i cut down trees for wood, but please don’t cut down my hope in god" . While our own structural engineer obsessed over the puppies we found in the rubble and danced and played with the clamorous kids nearby. People came up to me and asked me if i was Kurdish. `Our only Arabic speaker laughed and jokes with the people we met. The clairvoyant among us told us about how she senses a great sadness among these ruins. Nugget

A tiny baby. A mighty lesson.Today is World Anaesthesia Day- in 1846 on this day, ether was demonstrated in public ,opening an era of painless surgery finally. I celebrated it by anaesthetising this 1.7 kg nugget of a baby , one of twins born in a district about 10 hours away and brought to us at 12 days of age with an imperforate anus for a diversion colostomy. The anaesthesia team consisted of my 10th pass hospital assistant, my God and me. As I woke the baby up after the surgery and uneventful anaesthesia, I was reminded of the advances in anaesthesia that make this possible. But more importantly I was also made acutely aware of my God who manages to pull off these stunts in resource constrained settings like ours, time and time again. What a superhero God we worship! Dola re and Aicha

Watch the 02 girls dance to 'Dola re' as part of entertainment for a conference at the auditorium. The original performance had more girls participating and if anyone has the recording please email it to 02collab@gmail.com. We have such fond memories of the fun practice sessions at the Women's hostel rec-room. Aicha follows. How flexible everyone seems to be! I help me?

When do we pause to help others?When it doesn't take away anything from us?When we're abounding in plenty and "helping" won't take away anything from our hoarding? The hoarding may be physical comfort or emotional stability but we guard it fiercely and only stretch out a hand if it won't change our equilibrium . The Bible parable about the woman who had only two pence and gave away all she had to God's temple reminds us that God acknowledges our giving the most when we give despite knowing it could make us get out of our comfort zone. This morning,after a rather exhausting resuscitation of a man who came in hemorrhagic shock after a torn diaphragm and liver laceration, I walked out of theatre at 4 am hoping to get some coffee and biscuits for my exhausted but upbeat duty teàm. I am at a loss for words. Yet this is the time I choose to reach out to my blog. Its been more than a couple of years since I wanted to type down my thoughts, while alone in the quaint town of Vellore, which had become my home. How is one alone at home? Dont ask, but there were times, when I felt the urge to reflect, and hence this blog was created. Then why today again? I have come far from that home of mine, in a fairy-tale land called Paris. So much peace here. Yet I am in unrest. My mind fails to keep calm since I heard the news. I am told Nirmala sister is dead. She met with an accident on her way from Chittoor, where her husband and both daughters, everyone met their last.
